In our classroom

At Blairmount Public School we are committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students, ensuring every learner has the opportunity to thrive. A range of adjustments and strategies are embedded within everyday classroom practice to develop student talent, including:

Formative assessment to monitor growth and adapt learning:
Teachers regularly collect evidence of learning through observations, questioning, quizzes, and self-assessments. This ongoing assessment enables teachers to identify strengths and learning needs in real time and adjust pace, content, and instructional approaches accordingly, ensuring appropriate challenge and support for high potential and gifted learners.

Explicit teaching of critical thinking and problem-solving strategies:
Teachers intentionally model and teach strategies that support complex thinking, such as logical reasoning, identifying assumptions, evaluating evidence, generating multiple solutions, and breaking problems into manageable steps. Explicit instruction in these skills supports the development of metacognition, independence, and deep learning.

Opportunities for inquiry and curriculum depth:
High potential and gifted students are provided with learning experiences that promote deep understanding and conceptual thinking. Inquiry-based learning encourages curiosity through questioning, research, and investigation, while curriculum depth allows students to explore ideas beyond surface-level learning and extend their intellectual growth.

Flexible grouping for collaborative ideation and presentation:
Flexible and purposeful grouping enables students to collaborate with peers, share and challenge ideas, and co-create presentations or projects. These groupings support communication skills, social development, and the ability to work effectively with others who bring diverse perspectives and strengths.

Safe learning environments that encourage confidence, risk-taking, and perseverance:
Classrooms promote a growth mindset where effort is valued, challenges are embraced, and positive relationships are prioritised. These safe and supportive environments foster resilience, confidence, and sustained engagement for high potential and gifted learners.

School leaders and educators are committed to ongoing professional learning to strengthen their capacity to support high achievement and talent development. Teaching and learning programs are underpinned by evidence-based practices that promote excellence for all students.

• Our school recognises that every student is individual, so through our ‘Chasing Stars’ program we provide flexible and diverse opportunities for students to explore and grow their strengths outside the classroom.

• Our school identifies and supports students with high potential through targeted enrichment, extension and extra-curricular opportunities such as debating, competitions, critical thinking workshops, and STEM and coding clubs.

• All of our students, including high potential and gifted students, are encouraged to take on leadership roles through student representative council leadership, mentoring programs and peer coaching.

• Student talent is celebrated and extended through school musicals, drama groups, visual art, choir and dance lessons.

• Our students can take part in sports training, coaching sessions, house competitions and differentiated Physical Education programs.

• The Premier’s Debating Challenge helps our students to build logical arguments and confidence in public speaking.
• Our STEM Enrichment Partnerships with industry and universities deepen our students’ intellectual curiosity while developing innovation and collaboration.
• The Schools Spectacular and Pulse Alive is an iconic performing arts event that celebrates the talents, diversity and creativity of students from across NSW public schools.
• The Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) promotes whole-school participation in physical activity with leadership pathways and professional learning.
• The Representative School Sport Pathway and Gala Day events enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.
• Our mentoring programs connect our students with trusted adults including school alumni to build confidence, motivation, and interpersonal skills.
